Thierry Manoncourt: 1917-2010

Château Figeac

Sad to learn this morning that Thierry Manoncourt of Château Figeac, Saint-Emilion died on Friday 27th August, a few days short of his 93rd birthday. Manoncourt had made or been involved in all of the vintages of Figeac since 1947. His first vintage was actually 1943.

I had visited Figeac in about 10 days ago to interview Eric d'Aramon, Manoncourt's son-in-law who now runs the estate, for an article for Wine International. d'Aramon had talked about his father-in-law still having an active role, so reading about his death was a shock.

Funny, I wrote something about him (whom I only met once in my life) on the very day he died. Do you believe in telepathy or intersoul-communication ?

I met this gentleman in the early 80's. He always greeted us with open arms and was volubile about his vineyards. I'm certain the vines will carry his passion for a longtime. And time goes by.
